Even after they have degraded too much for continued automotive use, the lithium-ion battery packs in electric cars still have significant useful storage capacity.

That's led several automakers to experiment with alternative uses for these "second-life" batteries in stationary energy storage.

Battery packs can store energy generated by renewable sources for later use, or act as a limited backup power source.

But is that really the best use for these battery packs?

Would it be better to recycle the packs, disposing of them in the same way as most other components from cars that are at the end of their useful lives?

Recycling used electric-car battery packs would in fact be the better option, argues a new report from Lux Research (via Charged EVs).

This technology is changing so rapidly in the beginning it was the lithium that was holding back the recycling of the entire battery and it was cheaper to mine lithium new then recycle it now we have possible booms in the mining industry for copper and Cobalt but what we really need to get is batteries that can either swap out or batteries that can hold a lot more storage

Proven cobalt reserves are hugely insufficient to realize the pace of EV vehicles manufacturing required to meet the projections for the future. Even if we can recharge in 6 hours overnight -30 (some winter temps in Canada) draw power real fast and frigid weather is real hard on electrical components.....not practical for Canada! The battery where and tear will be higher in colder locations than warmer and therefore more recycling is needed. We are no where capable of this within infrastructure slated to handle this kind of onslot
